The postpartum doula is a valuable information resource and support person, especially sensitive to the needs of the new family. Her calming presence encourages family bonding and helps the new mother realize her intuitive mothering skills, easing the transition from pregnancy, be it the first or the fourth. This service also allows the father to give all his attention to his family knowing the household is running smoothly.
A postpartum doula can also make a "Preparing for Baby" visit prior to the birth, to help the new parents be sure that they have what they need before they bring the baby home.
The Postpartum Doula provides:
Personal care and rest for the new mother
Newborn care including infants with special needs as well as multiples, premature births, apnea monitoring, reflux, etc.
Counseling and guidance in infant care, nutrition and hygiene
Support in postpartum issues, i.e. depression, nutrition and exercises
Breast and bottle feeding assistance
Instruction in infant stimulation
Information and guidance on the value of infant massage
Sibling care and adjustment
Light housekeeping, laundry, and meal preparation
Grocery shopping and short errands
Community resources and referrals
Our doulas are certified, trained and experienced in teaching, and assisting first time moms and dads after the birth, as well as providing the extra pair of hands needed to tend to the newborn and siblings. All are Red Cross CPR certified and carry personal liability insurance. The doulas complete professional training in maternal and infant care, lactation support, infant massage, infant development, care of multiples, postpartum mood disorder, and family transitions.
We regularly require our doulas to attend professional continuing education workshops pertinent to postpartum and breastfeeding to maintain doula certification, and remain up to date on current evidence based studies. Mother and baby Matters is proud to have such a loyal staff! Most have been on board greater than 10 years and two of our staff doulas are celebrating 20 years in 2015!
Mother and baby Matters gets that Breastfeeding is something new and different - for BOTH of you! That's why we're offering a complimentary one hour visit with an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant with every Postpartum Doula package (over 20 hours) or Labor Support package registration. Our Lactation Consultants can help you with issues that arise or simply give you tips to make breastfeeding easier on you and your baby (or babies!).
