In today’s fast-paced lifestyle, 49% of Mumbaikars are struggling with sleep deprivation due to mobile messages and disturbances from their life partners. These individuals fail to get even six hours of sleep daily, despite the recommended seven to eight hours for good health. A survey conducted by the private organization LocalCircles has revealed this concerning trend ahead of World Sleep Day on 14 March.

According to the survey, only 42% of Mumbai residents manage to get between six to eight hours of sleep per night. Several factors, including uncomfortable beds, household responsibilities, sleep apnea, and children, contribute to sleep disruptions.

LocalCircles founder Sachin Taparia stated that the survey covered 348 districts across India, with 43,000 participants nationwide, including 5,572 from Mumbai. Participants were asked about their sleep patterns over the past 12 months, causes of sleep disruptions, and how they try to compensate for lost sleep.

Among the survey participants, 7% reported that they sleep for only 4 hours. Only 2% said they sleep between eight to ten hours regularly, while 42% stated that they sleep for 6 to 8 hours.

Mobile Messages Disrupt Sleep

The survey highlighted that 19% of Mumbaikars experience sleep disturbances due to mobile notifications and messages. 44% mentioned that they wake up at least once during the night to use the washroom, disrupting their sleep. Additionally, 12% blamed their lack of sleep on mosquitoes or outside noises.

To compensate for lost sleep, 20% of participants said they sleep longer on weekends or holidays. However, 34% admitted that they fail to recover their sleep deficit.
