Guwahati: Authorities in Assam’s Morigaon district have issued a show-cause notice to a gynaecologist who reportedly performed 21 caesarean deliveries within just 10 hours at the district’s civil hospital, raising questions over patient safety and adherence to medical protocols.
The notice, served by Additional District Commissioner (Health) Nitisha Bora, was addressed to Dr. Kantheswar Bordoloi, a medical and health officer at the hospital, following a surprise inspection of the maternity wing on September 6.
According to official records, Dr. Bordoloi carried out 21 lower segment caesarean section (LSCS) surgeries between 3:40 pm on September 5 and 1:50 am on September 6, all within a single major operating theatre.
The administration said the development raised “serious concerns” about workload management, sterilisation measures, and compliance with patient safety protocols. The doctor has been directed to submit a detailed case-wise report, including the preparatory steps and sterilisation processes adopted during the procedures.
The show-cause notice specifically asked him to explain the standard operating procedures (SOPs) followed for instrument sterilisation during what officials described as a “marathon series of surgeries.”
Responding to the allegations, Dr. Bordoloi defended his actions, stating that he is fully competent to manage multiple emergency surgeries within a limited timeframe and insisted that the surgeries were performed keeping patient welfare in mind.
