In a surprising incident from central China, a woman who visited the hospital due to stomach pain ended up delivering a baby—completely unaware that she was pregnant.

The unusual case was reported on June 16 in Ezhou, Hubei province. The woman, identified as Li, rode her electric bike to a nearby hospital around 2:00 PM, believing her discomfort was due to overeating at lunch. But what followed left her stunned.

While undergoing an ultrasound, Li’s abdominal pain intensified. It was during this examination that doctors informed her she was pregnant. Moments later, her water broke and labor began. Hospital staff quickly assembled an obstetrics team, and at 3:22 PM, Li gave birth naturally to a healthy baby boy weighing 2.5 kg.

“I Was Completely Perplexed”

Speaking to Jimu News, Li expressed her shock: “When the doctors told me I was pregnant, I was completely perplexed.”

The 30-something woman already has a six-year-old son, and her husband was out of town during the unexpected delivery. The couple had not planned for another child and were unaware of the pregnancy.

Explaining how it went unnoticed, Li said, “I did not have any morning sickness, which I experienced during my first pregnancy. I also have an irregular menstrual cycle, so I didn’t suspect anything when my periods stopped.”

Although she had gained some weight in recent months, she did not experience any typical signs of pregnancy. “Unaware of my pregnancy, I frequently rode my electric bike. Thankfully, the baby is healthy—this shows his strong vitality,” she added.

After the delivery, Li was transferred to a municipal health centre for postnatal care and observation. Both mother and child are reportedly doing well.
