Serum Institute of India Launches Nationwide Campaign to Raise Awareness on HPV-Cancer

The Serum Institute of India (SII) launched the Conquer HPV & Cancer Conclave 2025″ in Pune, marking the start of a nationwide public health campaign to raise awareness about Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and its link to multiple cancers, including cervical cancer.

India continues to grapple with a high burden of HPV-related diseases. According to the ICO/IARC Information Centre on HPV and Cancer (2023), the country records over 1.23 lakh new cervical cancer cases and more than 77,000 deaths annually. Apart from this, HPV is also responsible for up to 90% of anal cancers and 63% of penile cancers.

Moderated by Dr. Sanjay K. Lalwani, Vice Principal and Medical Director at Bharati Vidyapeeth Medical College & Hospital, the conclave featured a panel of medical experts who discussed the far-reaching impact of HPV. The speakers emphasized that that HPV is not limited to cervical cancer alone. It is also associated with cancers of the vulva, vagina, anus, penis, and oropharynx, affecting both men and women.

With peak HPV infections occurring between ages 15 and 25, the panel stressed the need for early awareness, adolescent education, and timely vaccination. The availability of an affordable HPV vaccine makes prevention more accessible than ever.

“Through these conclaves, we aim to build awareness about HPV and its connection to multiple preventable cancers,” said Parag Deshmukh, Executive Director, Serum Institute of India. “By engaging medical experts, healthcare providers, and communities, we hope to foster informed decision-making and proactive prevention.”

The session concluded with an interactive Q&A, encouraging open dialogue between experts and the public. The conclave is part of a broader campaign that will travel to cities nationwide, offering platforms for credible voices in healthcare to inform, educate, and empower communities.
