Laparoscopy Proves Highly Effective in Treating Endometriosis: Study

A recent study conducted by doctors at the government-run Cama Hospital has revealed that laparoscopic surgery is highly effective in treating endometriosis. The condition, which commonly affects women, occurs when tissue similar to the inner lining of the uterus (endometrium) starts growing outside the uterus—on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or pelvic cavity. This tissue responds to hormonal changes, leading to inflammation, pain, and in some cases, infertility, as it cannot exit the body like regular menstrual flow.

The study was conducted between October 2022 and October 2024 at Cama Hospital, located near CSMT in Mumbai. It involved 50 women diagnosed with endometriosis. Of these, 42% were between the ages of 26 and 30, while 59% were dealing with infertility. In 44% of the cases, endometriosis was found in the ovaries.

Significantly, 80% of the women were successfully treated through laparoscopic surgery. Dr. Tushar Palve, Superintendent of Cama Hospital and a gynecology and obstetrics specialist, stated that laparoscopy not only allows for accurate diagnosis but also provides immediate treatment in the same sitting. This makes laparoscopy the gold standard for managing endometriosis, he emphasized.

The research paper has been published in the International Journal of Science and Research and was authored by Dr. T. Rajshree and Dr. Tushar Palve from Cama Hospital.

Key Symptoms of Endometriosis:

  • Severe pain during menstruation
  • Persistent abdominal or back pain
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Difficulty in conceiving

Women experiencing any of these symptoms are advised to seek medical consultation for proper diagnosis and timely treatment.
