Cancer Day Special: Prevention Lies in Your Kitchen, Says Dr. Suresh Advani

The right use of spices in your kitchen can help prevent cancer. A recent research report by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition and the International Journal of Cancer highlights that commonly used household spices possess cancer-fighting properties.

On this Cancer Day, Padma Bhushan-honored cancer specialist Dr. Suresh Advani shares insights on which spices to use, their daily recommended intake, and the key compounds that help in cancer prevention.

Turmeric

Turmeric contains curcumin, which gives curry powder its yellow color, known for its anti-cancer properties. It is particularly effective in preventing prostate, digestive system, head, and neck cancers. Additionally, it may help combat brain, breast, and colon cancer due to its antioxidant properties. Recommended intake: ½ to 1 teaspoon daily.

Ginger

Ginger contains gingerol, a powerful antioxidant with anti-inflammatory properties that helps destroy free radicals and prevent cancer cell growth. It is especially beneficial in preventing colon, pancreatic, and ovarian cancer. Recommended intake: 1-2 grams of ginger powder or 1-2 inches of fresh ginger per day.

Rich in flavonoids and phenolic acid, black pepper can inhibit cancer growth. It also contains piperine, which enhances the absorption of curcumin by up to 2000%, increasing its cancer-fighting potential. Recommended intake: ¼ to ½ teaspoon daily, preferably with turmeric.

Garlic

Garlic prevents DNA damage and reduces the risk of colorectal cancer. It contains sulfur compounds and allicin, which help prevent DNA damage and slow cancer cell growth. It is particularly effective against stomach, colon, and lung cancer. Recommended intake: 1-2 raw or cooked garlic cloves daily.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon contains cinnamaldehyde and antioxidants that help prevent cancer cell growth. It also regulates blood sugar levels, reducing cancer risk. Research suggests cinnamon is beneficial in prostate cancer prevention. Recommended intake: ½ to 1 teaspoon of cinnamon powder daily.

By incorporating these powerful spices into your daily diet, you can strengthen your body’s defense against cancer and promote overall health.
