“I Thought It Was Just Menopause”—Woman’s Warning After Surviving Uterine Cancer

A 58-year-old woman from Canterbury is sharing her powerful story to raise awareness about an often-overlooked symptom of uterine (womb) cancerabnormal bleeding after menopause.

Dawn Willis, like many women, initially dismissed her postmenopausal bleeding as a natural part of aging. “So much happens to your body during menopause that I thought the bleeding was normal,” she said in a recent Instagram post. But what she assumed were hormonal changes turned out to be something far more serious.

For nearly a year, Dawn ignored her symptoms. But when her stomach began to swell, her family urged her to seek medical help. That decision, she says, saved her life.

Menopause or Cancer? Know the Difference

Doctors diagnosed her with endometrial cancer, one of the most common cancers in postmenopausal women. Left untreated, it can spread to other organs and become life-threatening. “I’m so angry with myself for ignoring it,” she admitted. “If I had waited even a few more months, I don’t think I’d be here today.”

Menopause or Cancer? Know the Difference

According to Dr. Rubina Shanawaz Z, Senior Consultant in Uro-Gynaecology, Gynaec-Oncology, and Robotic Surgery at Fortis Hospital, the overlap in symptoms can make diagnosis tricky.

“Menopause symptoms like hot flashes, mood changes, or vaginal dryness usually come and go. But cancer symptoms are persistent—and often worsen with time,” she explains.

Here are key warning signs women should never ignore, especially after menopause:

  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding
  • Unusual discharge (watery or bloody)
  • Pelvic pain or pressure
  • Abdominal bloating or swelling
  • Frequent urination or difficulty urinating
  • Unexplained weight loss, fatigue, or appetite loss

Dr. Shanawaz strongly recommends prompt medical evaluation for any unusual bleeding post-menopause. “Many women assume postmenopausal bleeding is harmless, but it’s always worth getting checked. Early detection and diagnosis significantly improve cancer treatment outcomes.”

“It may be nothing—but if it’s cancer, catching it early can save your life.”

Dawn’s Message: Don’t Wait

Dawn’s experience underscores the importance of regular health check-ups, knowing your family medical history, and having open conversations with your doctor. Her message is simple but urgent: “Don’t ignore abnormal bleeding. It could be the warning sign that saves your life.”
