India’s First case of HMPV reported in 8-month-old child in Bengaluru

India has reported its first case of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in an eight-month-old child in Bengaluru, who tested positive despite having no travel history. The Karnataka Health Department has informed the Health Ministry, though it is unclear if this strain matches the one causing a surge in China.

In another case, a two-month-old baby from Rajasthan, tested positive for Human Metapneumovirus at a private hospital in Ahmedabad. The infant, who was initially on ventilator support, has now stabilized.

India’s National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has responded to the crisis by reassuring the public that it is closely monitoring influenza and respiratory infections and is communicating with international health organizations.

Maharashtra and Kerala health authorities have issued advisories for heightened surveillance of Severe Acute Respiratory Infections (SARI) and Influenza-Like Illnesses (ILI). Residents are advised to adopt preventive measures, including:

  • Frequent Handwashing
  • Wearing face masks
  • Covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing

HMPV primarily affects young children and elderly

Young children, the elderly, and people with impaired immune systems are the main groups affected by HMPV, particularly during the winter season. Health officials in Maharashtra have encouraged patience and assured that no HMPV cases recorded in the state. The Health Ministry remains vigilant and committed to providing timely updates.

Rising Global Concerns Over HMPV Spread

Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory virus that causes flu-like symptoms, is currently on the rise in China. Five years after the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been an upsurge, and reports suggest the virus is spreading quickly. Some claim that multiple viruses, such as COVID-19, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, HMPV, and influenza A, are circulating simultaneously.

After China, Malaysia has also reported a 45% rise in HMPV cases in 2024, with 327 cases compared to 225 in 2023.

Japan, Hong Kong, and other nations are heightening vigilance. Japan is simultaneously grappling with an influenza outbreak, recording 94,259 flu cases in a single week in December 2024.

The Health Ministry of these nations has urged the public to adopt preventive measures, including frequent handwashing, wearing face masks, and covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing. Health agencies remain on high alert to mitigate the spread of respiratory infections.
