Due to excessive use of mobile phones, incidents of children aged 6 to 10 needing glasses are on the rise. Symptoms such as eye pain, redness and blurriness are emerging, indicating weakness in the eyes. In such cases, it is essential for parents to pay special attention to their children’s eye health. The question arises: how can we take care of children’s eyes, what are the causes affecting them and what preventive measures can be taken?
Doctor’s Perspective on the Growing Impact of Mobile Use
In an interview with Local 18, Dr. Somil Jain mentioned that after the COVID-19 pandemic, mobile activity has significantly increased, and young children are using mobiles excessively, which is hindering their distance vision development.
As a result, more children are starting to wear minus-number glasses. Approximately 15 to 20% of children now need glasses. Additionally, the use of iPads and tablets in schools has increased screen time, leading to redness, dryness, and eye problems due to blue light. This is also affecting their sleep and hindering distance vision development.
Other Causes of Eye Problems and Preventive Measures
Optometrist Hariom Patel noted that several factors could contribute to children’s eye weakness. The use of projectors and tablets in schools, prolonged online learning and blue light emitted from mobiles are damaging children’s eyes. Genetic factors may also play a role. Parents should ensure that children undergo eye check-ups every six months. It’s essential to engage children in outdoor activities and limit mobile use.
