Kavita Badannavar aborted the four-month-old foetus of Sonali Kadam, a 32-year-old from Alate village in Kolhapur’s Hatkanangle. Sonali died during the procedure. The case has been transferred to Karnataka’s Bagalkot district as that’s where Badannavar lives. Police said Badannavar is a known offender. ”
She would charge Rs 40,000. Six cases are pending against her. The latest one has a court hearing in June. Some time ago, she wrote an apology letter to police stating that she would never indulge in such activities,” said a senior police official, requesting anonymity.
Karnataka police has also arrested Sonali’s brother Vijay Gawali and “fake doctor” Maruti Kharat. “There is an illegal sex determination and abortion racket running clandestinely in the border districts of Maharashtra and Karnataka. We are going to crack down,” said the cops. Bagalkot district collector Janaki K M has sent out notices to several officials for dereliction of duty and sought written responses from them within 24 hours.
