In a rare and surprising event, nine sets of twins were born over a single week at Shaheed Bhagat Singh Azad Hospital in Balaghat, Madhya Pradesh.

This remarkable occurrence which took place between October 26 and November 3, left the hospital staff amazed. Sadly, one infant girl who was born underweight did not survive but the rest of the twins and their mothers are reportedly healthy.

Dr. Nilay Jain, the civil surgeon at the hospital expressed his astonishment, calling it a “once-in-a-lifetime” event.

“In my 30 years of service, I have never seen nine sets of twins born in just a week,” he said.

Four of the twin pairs were born prematurely and are receiving care in the hospital’s Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU). “It seems the twins have occupied the unit,” Dr. Jain remarked.

The surge of twin births within such a short span is unprecedented. Six sets were born within just 72 hours, followed by three more sets later in the week.

“The babies were born to mothers from different areas and backgrounds, so we can’t explain what caused such an unusual event,” Dr. Jain said.

While one family chose to discharge their baby boy after the loss of his twin sister, the remaining families are hopeful for a smooth recovery for their newborns. This exceptional week at the Balaghat hospital has left an impression on everyone involved, marking a memorable moment in the hospital’s history.
