Rats Bite Newborns’ Fingers, Head and Shoulder in the Indore Hospital ICU; Probe Launched

The babies, born last week, were under treatment in the NICU when the nursing staff noticed injuries on them.

Indore: Two newborns were reportedly bitten by rats inside the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of Maharaja Yashwantrao Chikitsalaya (MYH) in Indore, one of Madhya Pradesh’s largest government hospitals, prompting officials to launch an investigation.

The babies, born last week, were under treatment in the NICU when the nursing staff noticed injuries on them. A review of CCTV footage revealed rats moving near the infants’ beds. The first incident occurred on Sunday, followed by a similar case on Monday.

“In the last 48 hours, rats have bitten the fingers of one baby, while another suffered bites to the head and shoulder,” said Dr. Ashok Yadav, superintendent of MYH, to PTI.

He added that both infants had congenital deformities, and one had been abandoned in Khargone district before being sent to MYH for treatment. Both babies are now stable.

Dr. Yadav said the hospital is taking immediate action, including the installation of strong iron nets on windows and restricting attendants from bringing outside food into wards. A committee has also been formed to investigate the incidents.
