Suniel Shetty’s Comment on Athiya’s Natural Delivery Sparks Online Debate, Expert Says No Method is “Superior”

Actor Suniel Shetty has ignited a heated discussion on social media after commenting on his daughter Athiya Shetty’s decision to opt for natural Delivery.

In an interview with News18, the proud grandfather praised Athiya’s resilience during childbirth:

“In a world where everybody wants the comfort of having a caesarean baby, she chose not to do that and had a natural delivery.”

“I remember how every nurse and paediatrician in the hospital said that it’s unbelievable how she went through the whole process. That hit me as a father. I was like, ‘Wow, she’s ready!’ Athiya was very, very strong to do that.”

While many applauded Athiya’s choice and Suniel’s admiration, others criticised the way his remarks framed C-sections—implying that they are a “lesser” form of childbirth. Critics were quick to point out that all forms of childbirth require immense strength, and no method should be undermined.

What Do Experts Say?

Amid the social media debate, we spoke to Dr Sheetal Kasat, Gynaecologist at Civil Hospital, Thane, for medical perspective.

Dr. Kasat acknowledges that the number of C-sections has increased in recent years, driven by medical reasons as well as patient preference.

“Earlier, caesareans were done mainly for critical maternal issues. But now, foetal conditions like low heartbeat, breach position, or meconium passage have added to the list. Many women also request C-sections to avoid labour pain.”

She also noted that repeat C-sections are common. If a woman has had a caesarean once, doctors often recommend the same method for future deliveries.

C-Section vs. Natural Birth: Weighing the Risks

While both delivery methods are medically valid, they come with different considerations.

C-Section Risks (for the mother):

  • Greater blood loss
  • Higher risk of infection
  • Longer hospital stays
  • Extended recovery time (up to 6 weeks)

Normal Delivery Benefits:

  • Quicker recovery
  • Shorter hospital stays
  • Lower risk of surgical complications

However, Dr. Kasat stresses that no method is “superior”—each case is unique and should be decided based on medical necessity and personal preference.
