Celina Jaitly Opens Up About Rare Liver Disorder During Pregnancy, Says It Nearly Broke Her

Actress Celina Jaitly has candidly shared her emotional and physical journey through high-risk twin pregnancies, shedding light on a lesser-known but serious maternal conditionintrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP).

In a heartfelt post on Instagram, Celina revealed that she faced multiple health challenges during both her twin pregnancies, including gestational diabetes, symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD), and cholestasis, a rare liver condition that poses significant risks to both mother and baby. Through her story, she aims to raise awareness and offer support to women navigating similar complications.

“#MaternalHealth – When the Itch Could Have Taken My Babies: My Battle with Cholestasis,” Celina wrote alongside touching photos with her children.

Celina shared that she was born with a rare genetic predisposition to hyperovulation, which led to two spontaneous twin pregnancies. This condition, she noted, runs in her family—her mother also carried twins after her and her brother, but tragically lost them following a fall in Ranikhet. Her great-great-grandmother, too, died due to complications during a twin pregnancy.

“Both my pregnancies were overwhelming,” she wrote. “It nearly broke me.”

What is Cholestasis of Pregnancy?

Cholestasis of pregnancy is a serious liver disorder that typically occurs in the third trimester. It causes intense itching, especially on the palms and soles, due to the build-up of bile acids in the blood. Though it may seem like a minor symptom, the condition carries significant risks:

  • For the baby: increased chances of preterm birth, fetal distress, and stillbirth

  • For the mother: severe discomfort, insomnia, and emotional stress

Celina emphasized that cholestasis is not just a pregnancy itch, but a signal from the liver that something is wrong. Early diagnosis and medical intervention are crucial.

Compassionate Care and Treatment

After being diagnosed by her gynecologist, Celina was referred to a Jordanian hepatologist in Dubai who, in a moving moment, held her hand and said a prayer. “A man of science and faith,” she said, recalling how his compassion became a pillar of strength during her vulnerable time.

She was treated with Ursodeoxycholic Acid (UDCA)—a standard medication used to lower bile acid levels and relieve symptoms. Thanks to timely treatment and a supportive medical team, Celina delivered healthy babies.

Raising Awareness for Maternal Health

By sharing her personal story, Celina Jaitly is opening up important conversations around maternal mental and physical health, especially during high-risk pregnancies. Her courage not only highlights the importance of early diagnosis and compassionate care but also encourages other women to speak up about their experiences.

“I hope my story helps at least one woman feel seen, heard, and less alone,” she wrote.

Key Takeaways:

  • Cholestasis during pregnancy is a serious liver disorder, especially common in twin pregnancies

  • It increases the risk of preterm labor, stillbirth, and delivery complications

  • Symptoms include severe itching, especially on the hands and feet

  • Early diagnosis and treatment with UDCA are essential

  • Emotional support and compassionate medical care make a world of difference
