“I Wasn’t Expecting Special Treatment, Just a Little Empathy”: Radhika Apte on Cold Response to Pregnancy News

Radhika Apte opened up about her journey of acceptance, struggles, and the support she received during pregnancy in a conversation, as part of discussions on breastfeeding for World Breastfeeding Week 2025.

Mumbai: Bollywood actress Radhika Apte has opened up about a deeply personal incident from her pregnancy, recalling how an Indian producer reacted “coldly” when she shared the news.

Speaking during Neha Dhupia’s Freedom to Feed live session for World Breastfeeding Week 2025, the Sacred Games star revealed the stark difference in empathy and understanding she experienced between the Indian film industry and an international project.

Radhika shared that when she told an Indian producer about her pregnancy, instead of receiving warmth or support, she was met with insensitivity. “He wasn’t happy about the news. He responded coldly and even insisted I wear tight-fitting clothes despite my discomfort and bloating,” she said.

At the time, Radhika was in her first trimester — dealing with constant cravings, fatigue, and the usual physical changes of early pregnancy. “I was eating a lot — rice, pasta, anything I craved — and I was often in pain or feeling uneasy. But instead of understanding, I wasn’t even allowed to see a doctor on set. That truly disheartened me,” she recalled.

In sharp contrast, Radhika said the Hollywood filmmaker she was also working with at the time showed warmth and compassion. “When I mentioned that I might look like a completely different person by the end of the shoot because of the pregnancy, he laughed and said, ‘Don’t worry, even if you’re another person by the end of this project, it’s fine. Because you’re pregnant.’ That reassurance meant the world to me,” she shared.

For Radhika, the issue wasn’t about seeking privileges but about basic decency. “I wasn’t expecting special treatment, just kindness and basic humanity after sharing such a personal and joyous piece of news,” she emphasised.

Radhika, who is married to London-based musician Benedict Taylor, welcomed their baby girl in December last year and currently lives in London with her family.
