Rare 3-Month-Old Baby Brain Tumour Surgery in Mumbai | Gives Infant Second Chance at Life

A 3-month-old baby brain tumour surgery in Mumbai has given a new lease of life to an infant after doctors at Bai Jerbai Wadia Hospital for Children successfully removed a massive, life-threatening tumour in a complex procedure.

The baby, weighing just 5.6 kg, was brought to the hospital after parents noticed sudden lethargy, reduced movement, and low responsiveness—early warning signs that quickly escalated into a critical condition.

3-Month-Old Baby Brain Tumour Surgery in Mumbai: What Doctors Found

Medical scans revealed a large tumour measuring approximately 6 × 5 × 5 cm—nearly the size of a tennis ball—located in the posterior fossa, a sensitive area at the base of the brain that controls vital functions like breathing and consciousness.

The tumour had also caused Hydrocephalus, a dangerous condition where fluid builds up in the brain, increasing pressure inside the skull. Doctors noted a bulging fontanelle and an enlarged head circumference—key red flags in infants.

Why This 3-Month-Old Baby Brain Tumour Surgery Was Extremely High-Risk

The surgery, led by Dr. Abhishek Nadkarni and Dr. Sheena Ali, lasted nearly four hours and required exceptional precision.

Operating on such a young patient posed multiple risks:

  • The baby’s total blood volume was less than 500 ml
  • The tumour was highly vascular, increasing bleeding risk
  • It was pressing against the brainstem, which controls breathing and consciousness

Despite these challenges, the team achieved complete tumour removal without causing any new neurological damage.

Rare Diagnosis Makes Case Even More Unusual

Post-surgery analysis confirmed the tumour to be an Immature teratoma—a rare type of germ cell tumour typically seen in older children and rarely found in infants, especially in this brain region.

Following intensive care and monitoring, the infant recovered well and was discharged in stable condition, marking a successful outcome in an otherwise life-threatening case.

“We were extremely scared when our baby suddenly became unwell. The doctors supported us at every step. Seeing our child recover feels like a miracle,” the parents said.

Why This Case Matters for Parents

Experts say this 3-month-old baby brain tumour surgery in Mumbai highlights the importance of recognising early symptoms in infants, such as:

  • Unusual lethargy
  • Reduced feeding or responsiveness
  • Rapid increase in head size

Early diagnosis and timely medical intervention can be life-saving.
