Victory of Life Over Rare Bone Cancer During Pregnancy: Doctors Save Both Mother and Child

In a rare and inspiring medical feat, a 32-year-old pregnant woman diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer — Ewing Sarcoma — not only gave birth to a healthy baby but is now walking unassisted after successful treatment.

The exceptional case was reported at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai. According to Dr. Manit Gundavda, Consultant Orthopedic Oncology, the woman began experiencing pain in her right leg during the third trimester of pregnancy. As the pain worsened, a sonography was performed, followed by an MRI, which confirmed the presence of Ewing Sarcoma — a rare type of bone cancer. Dr. Gundavda stated that globally, there are only about 5 to 6 documented cases in medical literature where Ewing Sarcoma was diagnosed during pregnancy.

Three Major Challenges at the Same Time

The case posed three major challenges for the medical team: managing the mother’s cancer, ensuring the baby’s safety, and avoiding any complications during pregnancy. Following international protocols, a carefully modified chemotherapy plan was initiated using only three drugs instead of five, with adjusted dosages to safeguard both the mother and the unborn child. The team reported a 60 to 70 percent positive response to the treatment.

When the time for delivery approached, doctors performed a complex surgery that combined a C-section and tumor removal in a single operation. Despite the high risk, the coordination and preparation of the multidisciplinary team led to a successful outcome.

The team included Dr. Rajesh Mistry (Director, Surgical Oncology), Dr. Sumit Kshirsagar (Consultant, Radiation Oncology), Dr. Avinash Date (Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon), Dr. Qazi Ahmed (Consultant Plastic Surgeon), and Dr. Vaishali Joshi (Consultant Obstetrics and Gynecology).

Both Mother and Child are Healthy Now

Six months post-surgery, both mother and child are in good health. The mother is now able to walk without assistance, and her cancer treatment is ongoing without interruption. The baby is also doing well under regular medical supervision.

This extraordinary case stands as a testament to medical excellence, determination, and the power of coordinated care in overcoming life-threatening challenges.
