According to Columbus Police, the incident “escalated quickly,” though the exact circumstances surrounding the attack remain unclear. Authorities have not confirmed which of the family’s three pit bulls was responsible.

“This is a tragic accident,” Sgt. James Fuqua told WBNS. “There are really not a lot of words I can say to convey how I feel. Everyone in this process is grieving as if this child belonged to us.”

Following the incident, Franklin County Animal Control took custody of all three dogs. Officials are currently investigating and will determine what actions to take next.

Elizah’s mother, Mackenzie Copley, shared an emotional tribute on Facebook, posting photos of Elizah with the family dogs. “I will never understand why,” she wrote. “I am so lost and broken. This was the same dog who was side by side with my baby every single day, ” according to a report in The New York Post.

Her father, Kameron Turner, also echoed the heartbreak, writing, “Life is so not fair. How can I continue living without her?”

Elizah’s obituary described her as a baby whose “face would light up the room” and whose “laugh was contagious.”
